Castle in Malbork (German Ordennsburg Marienberg) is located in the province. Pomeranian Voivodeship on the Nogat River and is the largest brick stronghold in Europe and one of the finest examples of Gothic defensive architecture on our continent. The building was built from scratch by the Teutonic Order, and its construction started around 1280 and lasted until the first half of the 15th century. In the final version, the castle complex consisted of three elements. The first of them was the Low Castle, functioning as an outer bailey, in which mainly farm buildings were located. Another part of the castle is the so-called Middle Castle, with a large courtyard with objects such as the Chapel of St. Bartholomew, the Grand Commandery, the Grand Refectory or the Palace of the Grand Masters. Finally, the last part is called The High Castle, with a courtyard surrounded by cloisters and towers: Klesza and Wróbel. Malbork played a very important role in the Teutonic Order, being the seat of great masters in the years 1309-1457. In the years 1457-1772, it was one of the official residences of the kings of Poland. The castle underwent numerous renovations over the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Since 1997, the site has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
