Following the initial Diamant successful launches, heavier vehicles were soon studied to carry the expected bigger payloads.
Designers could rely on the existing family of liquid powered stages used by the Diamant programme, as well as a new generation of solid powered vehicles built for the military ICBM and IRBM.
Liquid propelled stages are designed with the letter L (liquide)and their propellant weight in tons.
Solid propelled stages are designed with the letter P (poudre) and weight.
Cryogenic stage are designed with the letter H (hydrogène) and weight.
These are the direct ancestors of Ariane stages.
In addition some new vehicles developped for other programmes were considered: Coralie second stage from the Europa programme and components of the British cancelled programme Black Arrow.
Coralie’s engines, developped from Diamant’s Valois are the forunners of Ariane’s Viking.
Many projects were considered between 1962 and 1973. None of them ever went in production as the satellite weight was growwing faster than the launchers performances.
Diamant 2: based on a military P10 rst stage and two «to be designed» cryogenic stages H2.2 and H0.5. 385kg payload in low orbit. Lift-o weight: 18t.
Diamant 10t: a P10, a Topaze second stage and a small P0.68 with a payload of 130kg in low orbit. Lift-o weight: 15.815t.
Super Diamant: a new P16 stage, a Topaze and a small P0.9 with a payload of 200kg in low orbit. Lift-o weight: 20.9t.
Hyper Diamant: a P16, a P10, a P4 Rita 1 (from the ICBM programme) and a
P1.5 to send 55kg in geostationnary orbit. Lift-o weight: 38t.
Advanced Diamant: an L10 (Coralie), a P10, a P4 Rita 1 and a P1.5. Lift-o weight: 25t.
Diamant BC, which was the natural follow-on of Diamant B before being cancelled for lack of funds and replaced with Diamant BP4: An L17 Améthyste, a P4 Rita 1, a P0.68 and a P0.28 to carry 250kg in low orbit. Lift-o weight: 127.26t.
Black Diamant: a curious design with a L10 Coralie rst stage, a second stage from the British Black Arrow programme and a P0.68 housed in a Black Arrow fairing (the very one to be used aboard Diamant BP4) to
lift 190kg in low orbit. Lift-o weight: 15.3t.
L433, a full solid propellant launcher: a P16, a P10, a P6 Rita 2 and a P0.68 to carry 60kg in geostationnary orbit. Lift-o weight: 35.5t.
